The first is a bside from the What You Could've Won single, released in october 2006:

MILBURN WEEK (day 2)

so the gig gets closer and closer and i get more and more excited and less able to concentrate on revision. 17 is in HMV onlines top 75 for downloads! but more people still need to buy it if it is to keep its current position (and hopefully get higher).

today's download is a song which is very special to the francis wights of blogspot.com as it was the song that i used to show him how good milburn actually are. i have converted many people to the milburn cause with this song and it's still one of my personal favourites.

The Holloways @ Sheffield Foundry

Photobucket

less than a week after i was in the same room watching the best gig of the year so far with bromheads jacket, i was back at the union to see the holloways. it was a while since i had seen them, they have bene recording new songs and it was the day after ally's birthday so a cause for celebrations all round.

we got there early in time to catch the support act frank turner, a very talented solo artist who i saw at corp about a month ago, but i was ill so this was the first time i could properly enjoy him and see him for just how talented he really is. opening with 'i knew prufock before he was famous' it became immediately obvious that there were some hardcore franky t fans in the crowd and they got more and more into it as his short set continued. bryn from the holloways came on for the last song, much to the delight of the arriving holloways fans.

the venue was nowhere near full, with tickets not selling particularly well, when the holloways took to the stage at 9pm. this didnt seem to bother the band, who kicked into 'dancefloor' which sounded even better than ever, as if the time spent in the studio has beefed up the older songs. second came their song about losing the tv remote which there wasnt such an enthusiastic crowd reaction to. they picked up again after this though with my favourite song 'happiness and penniless'.

after a couple of new songs they played the one most people were there for. a few bars into 'generator' and most of my pint was on the floor but it was worth it for the crowd reaction which it provoked. everyone got a lot more into it from this point on, as did the band with rising alcohol levels. before playing their hit single, alfie had got a bottle of something from somewhere and to the egging on from the crowd proceeded to down it. much hilarity and staggering ensued. the band really are good with the crowd and put on a great show for their fans. they never fail to make you crack a smile and their have the tunes to make it well worth going to see them.

by the time they had gone off and come back for an encore of 'malcontented one' and 'fuck ups' the whole crowd had been won over and a very enjoyable gig was complete. i'm looking forward to seeing them again at glastonbury, the new songs are sounding very good. they are one of the perfect summer bands.

Bromheads Jacket @ Sheffield Foundry

Photobucket

the much anticipated return of bromheads jacket (i hadnt seen them since the 13th of december 2006) finally happened on the first bank holiday of this month. the second of three 'secret' comeback shows, the band had been billed as homicidal psycho jungle cat. most fans knew it was bromheads though and snapped up tickets.

it being a beautifully sunny bank holiday we thought it would be good to sit in the park and drink cans before setting off to the venue so me finn and sean hit spar and got our cans and thai sweet chili crisps (cos we're sad and the crisps are in the bromheads song 'shopping spree'). nice and merry we set off to get the bus up the hill to the uni. we had a swift pint in the courtyard of bar one and tried to find a pool table to play on before the band, unfortunately they were all taken, one by joe c from milburn, so we settled for the quiz machine.

i was in the toilet when i heard bromheads come on stage (sporting extremely long hair!) and launch into 'leslie parlafitt' so i rushed back into the main room and down to the front. it really had been too long since a bromheads gig, they really are one of the best live bands there are. they played through a 40 odd minute set including promising new tunes and the classics that everyone wanted to hear. the new single, 'speakerbox', sounded great as they wheeled out the organ which tim invited the crowd to name for him. 'hazy' had the crowd going absolutely mental and the usual carnage of 'what ifs and maybes' capped off the best gig of the year so far for me. the second album is set to be a good'un with the new tracks sounding great, 'arms waving' (or summat like that) standing out.

it was a perfect ending to a sunny bank holiday weekend and left me excited for more bromheads gigs. roll on their album tour.

Boardwalk "Something For The Weekend"

Photobucket

an all dayer at the boardwalk in sheff put on by the up carey street singer was held on the 4th of may. at only £1.50 it was well worth it. the event was headlined by paddy orange but more on him later. sadly, due to the shiteness of sheffield's sunday bus service i only got there in time for the last song of bright young things the caparos set. still sounded excellent though, they will go far. you should check them out. soon after arriving and buying sam a pint i left again to have my tea at home cos i was skint.

determined not to be late for the bit i went to later i worked out the bus times and me and ally met dan and sam outside in time for up carey street's set. they get better and better each time i see them, 'queen of the teams' is an awesome song and the fact that they had a few mates down added to the good atmosphere.

the main attraction was paddy orange and after stopping to reminisce over old bromheads gigs with john (of 'mardy monkey' fame) at the bar we whiled away the intervening band over a pint. paddy came on stage full of energy and burst into 'barumba'. with him and sophie they have a really good live set up going on, he is a great frontman and her voice is amazing. the best song was probably 'where did you go', but i do have an affinity with 'sundi league', it being my favourite song for all of last summer. the new songs went down really well and got me (and many others) dancing. the future is bright (boom tish) for the paddy orange project, i can't wait to see them again... hopefully there will be many oppurtunities over the summer.

musn't forget to mention shane's awesome DJing, he really is a soldier, haven't been to a gig over the last year where i haven't seen him (even in amsterdam!) and it was nice to see him taking centre stage for a bit.
